One-way working between Hathersage Road and Booth Street starts Monday, 8 August

02 Aug 2016

Work will take place between Monday, 8 August and Sunday, 4 September, when we are building new cycle lanes, kerbing and bus stops

To allow this work to take place safely and efficiently we will be introducing a temporary one-way system between Hathersage Road and Booth Street. The one-way working means outbound traffic – heading away from the city centre – will need to use an alternative route, Upper Brook Street, during this time.

In the interest of maintaining a safe working area, cyclists will be advised to use an alternative route along Lloyd Street. As work moves progresses we’ll aim to reduce the diversion to enable them to re-join Oxford Road at the earliest opportunity, and when it is safe to do so.

There is already a permanent change to Oxford Road between Hathersage Road and Denmark Road which prioritises buses, bikes and pedestrians. The change means general traffic must turn right at Hathersage Road between 6am and 9pm, seven days aweek.

The temporary one-way working will also affect buses as operators will need to use alternative routes and stops when travelling away from the city centre. See:

During this phase of the works there will also be short-term, full closures of sections of Oxford Road to allow full resurfacing to take place. The dates for these closures are currently being finalised and will be confirmed in advance of work starting but will affect, separately, the following sections:

  • Hathersage Road to Moss Lane East
  • Whitworth Street to Portland Street
  • Grafton Street to Brunswick Street

These changes, being introduced gradually through the year, will deliver faster bus journeys and ensure services are more punctual and reliable, while improvements to cycling facilities along the road will make it easier and safer for more people to ride along this popular route.

Here is the schedule of work which will be carried out during August:

The work on Oxford Road marks a major landmark in the progress of the transformational Grow project. Grow will see more than £1 billion invested into city centre infrastructure improvements by 2017, including the Metrolink Second City Crossing, bus priority measures, six new and improved cycle routes into the city centre and major rail improvements.
