New Faculty structure launches

01 Aug 2016

Change from four to three Faculties following review of life sciences and cognate disciplines

John Owens Building

A new Faculty structure for our University launches today (Monday, 1 August) which sees all academic activity reconstituted around three Faculties - the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Humanities.

The changes come about following the findings of the review of life sciences and cognate disciplines which took place in 2015.  The recommendations of this review were endorsed by Senate and the Board of Governors.

Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health

The Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH) brings together the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences in a new, simpler, more integrated structure, offering the greatest potential for the University to have a significant impact across the life sciences.

The Faculty will feature three Schools – the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Medical Sciences and School of Health Sciences.  There will also be eight strategic research domains which will help to articulate research strengths, drive large-scale collaborative research activities and strengthen relationships with research and healthcare partners.

This more integrated structure will enable a more translational approach to biology, medicine and health – from pure discovery science through to clinical application and patient care.

The Faculty has been augmented with the transfer of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.  In addition a number of academic members of staff will move to the School of Chemistry from the former Faculty of Life Sciences and environment and ecology has joined the renamed School of Earth and Environmental Science.

The Manchester Institute of Biotechnology will remain at Faculty level as one of the University of Manchester’s Research Institutes (UMRI).
