Major permanent changes to Oxford Road

02 Jun 2016

Restrictions on vehicles using this route

As reported previously on Staffnet, major permanent changes to access to Oxford Road will come into force next week due to the bus priority package works being carried out by TfGM in partnership with Manchester City Council.

It is important that staff and other campus road users are aware of these changes as only buses and hackney carriages will be able to use the restricted section of Oxford Road from Hathersage Road towards the city centre.

The Directorate of Estates and Facilities is co-ordinating its fleet access and any essential access for contractor traffic. Only a very limited number of specified University fleet vehicles from the Directorate, where a strong case for access has been made, will have a permit granted by the City Council to access this stretch of Oxford Road.  The Council will allow some exceptional access for emergencies and critical works only. Those without a permit will be liable for a fine and a vehicle registration recognition system will be in place to monitor this.

All other University vehicles and vehicles on University business will be able to access campus buildings using adjoining roads. Upper Brook Street has been improved to provide all drivers with an alternative route.

Bus route diversions are already in place for the University’s redevelopment works at the Alliance Manchester Business School (set to finish on 5 June) and these will remain unchanged, details can be found on the TfGM website. Two-way cycle movements will be maintained during the surfacing works.

The details of the closure are as follows:

From Thursday, 9 June, drivers heading into the city on Oxford Road will be unable to travel past Hathersage Road between 6am and 9pm, seven days a week, and will instead need to reroute, by turning right onto Hathersage Road before continuing their journey along Upper Brook Street. Oxford Road can be rejoined via Booth Street East.

Ultimately, the scheme will prioritise access to Oxford Road for buses, hackney carriages, emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists between Hathersage Road and Grosvenor Street.  Further updates will be provided from TfGM as the scheme progresses.

Traffic heading away from the city centre will not be affected at this stage.
