University celebrates British Science Week

From robot orchestra demos at the Big Bang Fair to science meets art for Manchester Day
The University has been celebrating British Science Week with a host of events for the public.
A robot orchestra, getting started in astrophotography and getting behind the scenes at a leading cancer research centre are just some of the activities that have been taking place in Manchester, Birmingham and at Jodrell Bank.
Two of the events are being organised by Cancer Research UK at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre building in Withington, Manchester. Behind-the-scenes tours of the MCRC labs were fully booked, but there’s still a chance to join the Science Café on Thursday, 17 March to hear from a cancer researcher about his work, in an informal talk.
The world-famous Jodrell Bank gave a beginner’s guide for getting into the world of astrophotography. Attendees learned how to capture different images of the night sky such as constellations, the colours of stars and star trails.
At the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, Professor Danielle George conducted the Manchester Robot Orchestra and showed how discarded technology and even everyday items from around the home can be put to new and exciting uses.
Professor Brian Cox discussed gravitational waves and the origin of life at University Place in support of Childreach International.
And finally, science meets art on Manchester Day this year with a Eureka theme for the annual celebration of Manchester life so University scientists and artists are coming together at a secret location to come up with ideas, have fun and mingle together.
