University’s local employment initiative shortlisted for Guardian Sustainable Business Award

The Works colleagues

The University’s commitment to providing support to unemployed people in the region has been recognised nationally for the second time this year.

The Works, one of the University’s social responsibility signature programmes delivering employment and skills support to communities across Manchester and beyond, has been shortlisted for a second national award in 2016 ¬– a Guardian Sustainable Business Award. This is a significant achievement given that these awards are open to all UK business and industry sectors.

The Works is an initiative devised by the University and delivered in partnership with the Manchester Growth Company. It is the only employer-led facility of its kind in Greater Manchester and represents a unique approach both in British higher education and other employment sectors in our region.

The University has taken a lead role in creating a partnership of local employers, community organisations and state agencies to tackle unemployment through skills development programmes and ring-fencing jobs for local unemployed people.

Led by the University’s Assistant Director of Human Resources Steve Grant, The Works provides people looking for work or skills support with privileged access to training, advice and job opportunities, both at the University and with a host of other partner employers. It has established a physical centre in our neighbouring district of Moss Side with a second site in Chorlton-on-Medlock in development.

Since March 2011 The Works has delivered circa 15,000 individual advice and guidance sessions and supported 2,822 people into work, 97% of whom were unemployed at the time.

Steve said: "On behalf of all colleagues and partners that contribute to The Works I’m delighted to see it recognised again this year. That we have been able to have such a positive impact upon individuals, families and communities is tremendously rewarding.”

The winner will be announced at an Awards ceremony on 26 May in London.
