Get involved in Dementia Matters

07 Dec 2015

Researchers needed for interactive workshops to improve dementia awareness in secondary schools

Dementia Matters is a series of dementia-themed collapsed timetable days in secondary schools across Manchester.

It is made up of several interactive workshops and aims to help improve dementia awareness and empower young people to talk more openly about dementia.

As part of the day, the workshops would really benefit from having researchers working in dementia involved in the delivery.

The workshops are:

  • Spending money – how do we choose which research to fund?

We are looking for researchers working (broadly) in one of 3 areas of dementia research: basic science, clinical research and psychosocial research. They will be asked to ‘pitch’ to students for funding towards their area of research and then will break out to work with smaller groups of students to discuss why they became involved in research, motivations, career path, financial/social/additional benefits for their area of research and benefits for patients/carers.

  • What does dementia mean to me?

Students will hear from a range of individuals about their different perspectives and experiences of dementia. This will include a person living with dementia or a carer, a healthcare professional and a researcher working in the field of dementia. After each presentation, there will be a facilitated discussion for students to draw out some of the key points raised.

  • Assistive Technology

This workshop will look at some of the challenges faced by people living with dementia and explore how technology can be used to support everyday living. Any researchers working in this area would be really useful in helping to guide group work, offering their expertise and discussing design challenges with the students.

A briefing session for volunteers will be held in January 2016.

So far, there are two dates to deliver Dementia Matters but more may be scheduled during the summer term of 2016. The two dates are:

  • Tuesday 2 February 2016, 3pm-6pm (this will include workshop 1 only); at Aquinas College, Nangreave Road, Stockport, Cheshire SK2 6TH; audience of up to 30 sixth form students aged 16-18.
  • Thursday 11 February 2016, 9am-3pm (this will include workshop 1, 2 and 3); at St Peter's RC High School, Kirkmanshulme Lane, Manchester M12 4WB; audience of 30 Year 9 students, aged 13-14.
