This award recognises the School’s use of iPads, apps, and content to promote creativity, collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking to transform learning and teaching.

Professor Anthony Freemont, Head of School, commented: “Manchester Medical School is proud of its reputation as an innovator in medical education. The iPad is embedded throughout the MBChB programme and we are proud to be spearheading the use of technology to create personalised learning tailored to the diverse needs of all of our students. Equality was at the heart of the iPads project, with the desire to ensure all of our students had access to the same technology and resources irrespective of location.”

In order to gain recognition Manchester Medical School had to demonstrate its achievements in five areas of best practice that include Visionary Leadership, Innovative Learning and Teaching, Ongoing Professional Learning, Compelling Evidence of Success, Flexible Learning Environment. This was evidenced in the form of an iBook that has now be published on the iBook Store.

Tim Cappelli, Senior Project Manager, commented: “It’s great to see our work being recognised externally. Our iBook documents the exemplary and innovative work being carried out by tutors and students in using the iPad to both create and deliver content, making learning more immediate and relevant to our students.”

The Apple Distinguished Program is reserved for programmes that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, as well as demonstrating a clear vision of exemplary learning environments. This is a two-year designation for 2015-17, and provides the Medical School with global recognition for its work along with the opportunity to share best practice, host Apple-sponsored workshops and site visits. In achieving the award, the Medical School joins a small number of leading Colleges and Universities across the world.
