Read all about the revolutionary spirit that defines our University

Lemn Sissay new magazine

The University’s new magazine is out now, both online and in news stands across campus – and promises to showcase our revolutionary work through fascinating articles and beautiful imagery.

The University of Manchester Magazine is an expression of the spirit of exploration, discovery and innovation that defines our University, celebrating the achievements of our staff and students past and present, and inspiring stakeholders around the world to make us a partner in their ambitions.

This first edition includes a captivating interview with our new Chancellor, Manchester poet Lemn Sissay MBE. He tells us how he wants to inspire and be inspired at the University.

“I could not be in a more inspiring place on earth than The University of Manchester,” he says. “I can stand on solid foundations: I’m wanted here and that makes me incredibly proud and makes me feel that, at this time in my life, this is where I should be, doing this.”

With opening words from University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, the first issue includes features on the 2015 British Election Study, the 2D materials revolution set to change industry the world over and the fight to tackle global inequality, as well as commentary from academics on some of society’s biggest challenges including the migrant crisis, dementia and climate change.

Editor-in-chief Kate Cassidy said: “This new magazine is testament to the collaborative, creative and innovative spirit of working that lies behind so much of the University’s success.

“We have looked to both the University’s proud heritage and revolutionary spirit and to its future of world-changing discovery to produce a publication that brings together the finest examples of research, teaching and learning, and social responsibility, and aims to inspire our communities and partners, locally and across the globe.”
