Opportunity for students to bring art to the world of science and research

18 Nov 2015

Tell your students about this unique opportunity for science and arts students to collaborate on a project which aims to bring the research behind science alive

Working with science researchers from Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation research (MCCIR), professional artists and patients from Salford Royal, students will work together to produce information and art, illustrating a specific area of scientific research.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester are working together to offer this innovative programme of work, focussing on the area of inflammatory diseases, including conditions such as asthma, Crohn’s disease, allergies and psoriasis, which will enable young people to take part in a range of activities to further discover their future potential and present their work.

Students across both disciplines will develop further understanding and a broader knowledge ab Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester are working together to offerout research going on to find new methods of treating these diseases. Through working collaboratively, they will explore how they can explain complex research processes, science and diseases through art, to members of the public.

Outline of project

  • A ‘meet the scientist’ session where all students get to meet researchers investigating inflammatory conditions and ask them about not only their research but their career path.
  • A ‘meet the patient’ session where both the scientists and students can get an idea of the impact of living with an inflammatory condition and how research could impact on this.
  • A ‘meet the artist’ session where students have a Masterclass on Medical Art.
  • The Science students have a day in the lab, hosted by the MCCIR, to perform a mini experiment.
  • An ‘art workshop’ for the arts students to learn about communication complex ideas through art.
  • Mentoring sessions from the scientists and artists to develop the art and scientific poster presentations
