Science and Technology in the service of the State

03 Oct 2014

Two-day workshop to discuss ‘mission oriented’ systems

Science and technology done by or for Government to support the goals and missions of public policy is facing unprecedented challenges from changes in public policy missions, shifts in the global production of scientific knowledge and technology and from austerity.

A two-day workshop ‘Science and Technology in the Service of the State’ is to explore how “mission-oriented” science and technology systems are coping with such challenges.

It will explore the characteristics of such systems and their evolution; the changing role of advice and advisors in the policy process; the place of government labs and government scientists; and the changing relationship between academics and policy makers.

Speakers will include Professor Roger Pilke, from the University of Colorado, Professor James Wilsdon, of THE Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, and Professor Brian Balmer, University College London (UCL).

The workshop will be held at the MIOIR conference room, Harold Hankins building room 10.04/10.05. It begins at 10am on Thursday 9October, with coffee from 9.30am, and concludes at 3pm on Friday 10October.
