Three glorious string quartets from Eastern Europe, from the tunefulness of Borodin (his slow movement immortalised in the musical Kismet) to the symphonic depths of post-war Shostakovich, via the pungency of Enescu, combining Francophile sophistication with his roots in Romanian folk music.
