Office of Social Responsibility blog needs you!

Lenox Green

The Office of Social Responsibility is keen to encourage more staff and students to share their inspiring stories and tell the world about activities and initiatives that they are involved in.

Whether you are a dementia champion, involved in volunteering, have become a school governor, are engaging with the community or carrying out important research, let’s hear about it on the Make a Difference blog.

The blog saw a two-month awareness raising campaign reach its finale as part of the launch of the University’s Social Responsibility Strategy back in November.

Social responsibility is one of our three core strategic goals in our Manchester 2020 strategy, sitting equally alongside our commitments to world-class research and outstanding learning and student experience.

As President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nancy Rothwell put it, “Our first two goals of world class research and outstanding learning and student experience might be characterised by the question ‘what are we good at?’ In contrast, social responsibility can be characterised by a different question; ‘what are we good for?’”

To that end, the University is pursuing change across five social responsibility priorities: Research with Impact, Socially-Responsible Graduates, Engaging our Communities, Responsible Processes and Environmental Sustainability.

In addition there are a set of signature programmes around each of these strategic priorities, so that we can focus and measure our efforts.

And as well as the blog, there are two publications. ‘Measuring the Difference’ illustrates the significant economic and social impact created by the University and ‘A Guide to Social Responsibility at the University of Manchester’ outlines the priorities of the strategy and the many ways our staff, students and alumni can become involved and continue to make a difference.
