Ensure you can still maintain your website

09 Dec 2013

If you maintain a University website using Dreamweaver, FileZilla or similar; you may need to change your settings before February 2014.

Note: This does not affect websites edited in Terminal Four Content Management System.

How will this affect me?

If you use Dreamweaver, Filezilla or WinSCP or similar editors and file transfer protocol (FTP) programs, you should make sure you log in to sftp.man.ac.uk and not the older publish.man.ac.uk service.

What is the SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) service?

Our new sftp.man.ac.uk service is for people who manage web sites on our Linux web farms.

This new service allows you to transfer files with improved security.

It resembles the older publish.man.ac.uk service, but instead of using a password unique to the service, you will need to use your University central username and password.

When can I use the SFTP service?

The sftp.man.ac.uk service is available now.

How do I use the SFTP service?

If you are setting up your software for the first time, configure it as follows:

  • Host name: sftp.man.ac.uk
  • User name: Your central IT username
  • Password: Your central IT password

If your program is already set up to use publish.man.ac.uk, change the values to match the above.

How can I test the SFTP service?

You can test the SFTP service by using any tool that supports the SFTP protocol: PuTTY, WinSCP, DreamWeaver, FileZilla, and others. It is a good idea to try to connect to SFTP before starting to use it.
