02 Dec 2013

The Discovery Centre won the prestigious Marketing Cheshire award for its ‘Live from Jodrell Bank’ Science – Music festival in the face of challenging competition from other events across Cheshire.

Jodrell Bank wins award at Cheshire Tourism event 2013
The award gives public recognition of the University’s commitment to promoting science and welcoming people from the local community and the wider region into its publicly accessible spaces - a key element of Goal Three. The event is designed to bring new audiences to engage with University research and was successful in bringing over 100 researchers to deliver science engagement activities as part of the event’s Science Arena. The event is self-funding and, in its third year, is now one of the UK’s largest science festivals.

The Judges felt that: ‘the event was successful in increasing visitor numbers year on year. It helped promote science and furthermore got people talking about it. At all levels the attraction strives to be the best in its field and this is exemplified by the awards it has won over the past few years.’

Dr Teresa Anderson, Director of the Discovery Centre, said: ‘This event is a real team effort, from the Discovery Centre staff who put in really long hours to make it happen, the Observatory staff who are amazing in their technical and scientific support to colleagues  right across the University who turn up come rain or shine to talk to the public and engage them with their research. It’s a great achievement and we are all delighted to be recognised in this way’.
