Manchester Autism Workshop unites The University

The inaugural Manchester Autism Workshop held on 18th September at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility brought together over 30 autism researchers from across the University, spanning the Faculties of Humanities, Life Sciences, Medical and Human Sciences and the Central Manchester University hospitals.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects not only how a person communicates with and relates to other people, but also how they make sense of the world around them.

The first workshop of this newly established multi-Faculty collaboration provided an exciting forum for introductions, sharing information and stimulating discussion, with eight varied and interesting talks covering the topics of autism education, genetics and pathogenesis, visual perception and imitation, the neural basis of memory impairments, neuroimmunology, catatonia and intervention for parents of autistic children.

The long term goal of the group is to bring together the diverse and high quality autism research being carried out within Manchester to increase critical mass, improve dissemination, education and training and to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration and funding.
