One-day course on Wednesday, 14 August 2013 (9.30am – 4.30pm) at STDU, 2nd Floor Humanities Bridgeford Street.

Target audience

This introductory course is aimed at team leaders, supervisors and managers who are relatively unfamiliar with the topics of strategy and change management/leadership.

 It is not suitable for people experienced in, and/or knowledgeable about, strategy and change leadership.

Course overview

Organisational success depends upon effective strategic thinking and change management. This course will provide an introduction to, and overview of, both topics and cover the following areas:

  • The use of basic strategic thinking techniques such as PESTLE and SWOT analyses;
  • Theories of strategy formulation – planned and emergent; corporate and ‘business’;
  • The strategic approach in the university;
  • Change theories/models – Lewin and Kotter;
  • Translating change management theories into practice e.g. project planning, process improvement;
  • Peoples’ emotional reaction to change and the politics of change.

Course objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Use one strategic thinking/planning technique;
  • Explain important links between strategy and managing/leading change;
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in strategic/change management approaches e.g. as pertains in the University.
