Manchester Art Walk visits MMU, Manchester Museum and Whitworth Art Gallery

On Thursday, 30 May (5.30-7.30pm) starting outside the entrance to the MMU All Saints Building,
At just under a mile long, the next Manchester Art Walk will visit the Special Collections Gallery at Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery with introductions at each.
The walk will begin at MMU’s Special Collections Gallery with an introduction to their current exhibition, Mr Dedman’s Victory Suit: Intimate stories of make do and mend. This lovely exhibition brings together work made by anthropologist Amanda Ravetz and textile artist Antonia Riviere during a two-month research fellowship at the National Film and Sound Archive in Australia in 2012, alongside items from MMU’s Special Collections Library. The exhibition looks at clothes rationing during World War Two in both Britain and Australia and how limitations and loss affect individual makers.
It’s then just a short walk to Manchester Museum for an introduction to the exhibition All Other Things Being Equal from the exhibitions curator Johan Oldekop. This exhibition, based on three years of personal research by the scientist and photographer, in the The Ecuadorian Amazon, mixes photographs and sounds with graphical representations of socio-economic data and specimens from the Museum’s natural history collection.
And finally at the Whitworth Art Gallery we will get an introduction to two exhibitions exploring the Land Art movement. A pioneer in conceptual and public art, American born Nancy Holt is a key member of the Land Art movement, which began in the late 1960s with artists in New York taking their work out of the gallery and into the landscape. This exhibition focuses on Holt’s photography and film. And British born Richard Long who most emphatically changed the artist’s view from that of observing the landscape to journeying through it in his 1967 work A Line Made by Walking. Since then, Long has made sculptures during his many walks, the art being inseparable from his movement through the landscape.
