Manchester Life Sciences PhD Conference 2013

15 May 2013

On Friday, 10 May, Life Sciences PhD students had an opportunity to present their work in an informal environment and develop essential skills for careers in academia.

Organised by five members of the FLS Postgraduate Society, the event was a huge success, with over 300 delegates attending from Universities across the North-West.

57 students gave talks in six parallel sessions and more than 50 students gave poster presentations. The presentations showcased some of the amazing research which goes on in the life sciences, with topics ranging from stroke and diabetes, through to locomotion in birds.

The conference also welcomed guest lectures from Professor Nick Turner, Deputy Director of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, and from Professor Martin Humphries, Vice-President and Dean of FLS.

Postgraduate students were recruited to act as chairs and judges for the event, providing them with the opportunity, not normally available during their studies, to develop essential skills for a career in academia.

New members are always welcome at the FLS Postgraduate Society, which also hosts an annual lecture from a prominent speaker and a Spring Ball.
