Students' Union honours University staff at Manchester Teaching Awards

12 May 2013

Almost 700 outstanding teaching and support staff nominated by 1300 students across the campus

Rajinder Dudrah, Best Lecturer in Humanities and Best Lecturer of the Year

The Manchester Teaching Awards, a glittering ceremony held in conjunction with the Students’ Union Awards, was attended by over 500 people.

The Students’ Union received nearly 700 nominations from 1300 students across the university, all of whom were eager to nominate lecturers and support staff for awards. Nominees were shortlisted and the winners chosen by a panel of course reps from across the University.

Rajinder Dudrah swept the board at the event, winning Best Lecturer in Humanities and Best Lecturer of the Year. Students who nominated Rajinder noted that he had “made the learning experience at university that bit more dynamic and interesting. He is so easy to talk to and always really enthusiastic and knowledgeable when you want to discuss something in more detail.”

Other winners included Alfie Brown, who won Best Postgraduate Teacher. Alfie was recognised for his innovative teaching techniques and his detailed feedback. Alfie was noted as having “gone over and above the course tutor requirements in terms of time given to supporting his students”.

Nick Pringle, General Secretary at the University of Manchester Students’ Union commented “The evening was a great occasion to recognise all the students who give so much to the union, University and wider community. The awards ranged from course rep of the year to student-led campaign of the year and it was fantastic to have so many nominations this year. The awards were bigger than ever and featured performances from the Bangladeshi Student Society and the Beatboxing Society. Hopefully the awards will continue to grow and next year’s will be bigger and better still!”
