University's klezmer band will perform at Manchester Jewish Museum

Michael Kahan Kapelye, the University's very own klezmer band, will perform at ‘Gathering of the Klezmorim’ - an evening of performances by three klezmer bands presented by Manchester Jewish Museum.
The band is run by Dr Richard Fay, Programme Director, MA in Intercultural Communication, and Ros Hawley, Manchester's leading klezmer clarinettist and a professional musician, as part of the Ensemble Performance module of the MusB degree in the Music Department.
The ensemble is named after Ros's former musical partner (in a band called the Klezmer Gourmets), who was tragically killed in a random act of street violence five years ago.
This is the third year of the ensemble, which recruits a new cohort of students each year. The concert on 30 May will be the second for the current cohort; they wil play alongside Ros's band, the Manchester Simcha Quartet, and Richard’s, the Hard Times Kapelye.
The three bands will be playing their unique klezmer sounds inside the Museum’s historic synagogue building, creating a truly memorable evening.
A musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe, klezmer originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. It is easily identifiable by its characteristic expressive melodies, reminiscent of the human voice, complete with laughing and weeping.
