Network modernisation
Project complete
IT Services and Roc Technologies have completed the renewal of the University’s network infrastructure, providing a more robust and reliable network service. This includes the the wired Local Area Network (LAN) and Wi-Fi connections across campus. The Network is now continuously monitored to identify problems quickly and prevent disruption.
There is just one site outstanding for the LAN Refresh- Salford Royal Hospital.
The Local Area Network (LAN) switches have been renewed in the following buildings or sites:

Upcoming schedule of works – LAN Switch Renewal
We need to replace the ageing network switches in the communications rooms to improve reliability and security whilst reducing the University’s running costs. To ensure this is done with minimum disruption, we would like to liaise with the relevant people who may be affected in your building to ensure all concerns are addressed.
Please note:
- Prior to the transformation network sockets that haven’t been used since March 2019 will be deactivated. If a disconnected socket is still required it can be reactivated if this is requested before the completion date. Email: it.modernisation@manchester.ac.uk
- To ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, and unless advised otherwise, the work will take place overnight between the hours of 6pm and 7am. Work will be confined to the local communications rooms but will require periods of outage throughout each evening.
- As this work is usually planned to take place overnight, everything will be put in place to ensure the building will be communicating as normal each morning at 7am.
- During the outage periods, all methods of communications to the building will be unavailable, so colleagues currently remotely connecting to a computer in the building won’t be able to do so during this time.
- Connectivity to devices including: Security Alarms, Building Maintenance Systems (BMS), CCTV and fridge communication will be unavailable during the outage periods.
- All tests will be completed following the transformation to ensure that everything that is impacted will be back online and operating as normal.
- The work to upgrade the Local Area Network (LAN) will be undertaken by IT Services and the University’s network partner Roc Technologies.
- Devices connected to the network will not need to be reconfigured after the upgrade.
- We will add the dates below as they are agreed upon. We will circulate information for all site contacts 2 weeks in advance of agreed dates with advanced notice of the works and answer queries.
*Dates in italic are proposed and subject to confirmation.
