Getting involved in Get Started

14 Aug 2019

Each year, the Library welcomes new students at the start of Semester 1 through the Get Started initiative.

This year, Get Started will run from Monday, 16 September to Friday, 4 October and we'd like as many staff as possible to get involved in this Library-wide campaign.

How can I get involved?

We've combined all the staff participation elements of Get Started into one form to make it easier for you to get involved, improve and hone your communication and presentation skills and welcome a new wave of students to the Library.
Read about the opportunities available and use this form to sign up.

What can I do?

Staff can support Get Started in a variety of ways, and have the freedom to choose activities that align with their own personal and professional learning and development goals. Activities include:

Main Library: Textbook Rescue (2 hours, Friday, 20 September only)

  • You’ll be helping new library users to collect free text books from our Textbook Rescue stall on the ground floor of the Main Library.

Start of Year Fair (2 hours, 16-17 September only)

  • You'll be staffing our stand at the University Start of Year Fair and chatting with new students about the many Library services on offer.

Main Library: Welcoming and wayfinding (2 hours, 16 September-4 October)

  • You’ll be greeting new library users in the foyer of Main Library and directing them to the things that they need.

Main Library: Request from Shelf (2 hours, 16 September-4 October)

  • You’ll be retrieving material from the shelves all over the Main Library.

Main Library: Get Started Anytime (2 hours, 16 September-4 October)

  • You’ll be staffing the Get Started Anytime stand on the ground floor of Main Library and showing new library users (and some experienced ones!) how to find material in the library and how to get help when issues arise.

Main Library: enquiries (2 hours, 16 September-4 October)

  • You’ll assist the Customer Services team by monitoring our online and telephone enquiries and can be based anywhere.

Welcome Presentations (2 hours, 16 September-4 October)

  • You'll be giving a short presentation to a school to provide students with an overview of the resources, services and support they can find through the Library. You'll have the chance to receive face-to-face training and the presentation will be already supplied.

How much time will it take?

The time commitment required will be between 2-4 hours, and clear guidance will be given in advance. You'll be offered face-to-face training before undertaking the Welcome Presentations.

Why should I get involved?

Remember what it was like when you started uni or college and how a welcoming and friendly face made a lasting impression? We're here to support students and the best way to introduce them to all the Library has to offer is when they start their Manchester journey.

It's also a great opportunity for you to develop or hone “soft skills” such as communication, listening, self-motivation, presentation skills, teamwork and problem solving. And you can meet and work with other colleagues in the Library too.
