Student awards

There are a number of awards available across the Faculty that recognise the excellent work done by our students. Below is a list offering further information about each available award and how to nominate individuals for recognition.

International Excellence

Scholarships of £2,000 are offered to outstanding international undergraduate students with the offer of a place in the Faculty. This scholarship can be renewed for up to 4 years subject to sustained academic performance.

Indian Excellence

Any Indian student who can demonstrate excellent levels of attainment while studying the International Baccalaureate or Standard XII is eligible for the award. The highest ranked student will receive £40,000 payable as £10,000 per year, for up to four years of study. Two students will receive awards of £20,000 each payable as £5,000 per year, for up to four years of study.

FSE Entry Scholarship

This awards is available to top performing applicants in each Department. The grade requirements are different for each department to reflect what is exceptional against the standard entry requirements. Winners will receive a one-off payment of £1,000. This award can be topped up by the Department if they wish, and the Department also has the right to brand the award.

Outstanding Achievement Award

This is awarded to the top 0.5% of the undergraduates graduating each year (presented at the summer graduation ceremonies) and will appear on students' Higher Education Achievement Records (HEAR). Each student is awarded with a prize cheque for £1000.

Distinguished Achievement Award

The award is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The DAA is awarded to students who have:

  • Made an exceptional contribution to life of the University;
  • Contributed significantly to the development of the curriculum;
  • Enhanced other students' experience at University through activities such as peer support, student societies, or work with central services such as Recruitment and Admissions;
  • Has coupled excellent academic achievement with either major external activity (top level sport or music) or have overcome major difficulties.

The postgraduate DAA nomination deadline falls in November and the undergraduate in January.

Grundy

Awards of between £1,200 and £4,500 are available for post-graduate students who are intending to pursue courses leading to careers in technologically or scientifically based disciplines in industry, commerce or the professions. Students can apply for funding if they can demonstrate that they are in genuine financial need and have been accepted or provisionally accepted onto a postgraduate programme at any of the following five universities (irrespective of where they obtained their first degrees): Imperial College London, The University of Manchester, The University of Nottingham, University of Southampton and University of Surrey.

BP STEM Scholarship

Students on relevant courses are invited to apply to BP online (normally in November of their first year). Students are selected on the basis of their applications, online tests and an interview. The scholarship is renewable each year based on examination performance. Successful students will receive £3,000 per year.

BP Achievement Award

Students on relevant courses are invited to write a 1,000-word essay on a specific subject. There are up to three awards available per Department and year. Students are selected on the basis of their entry qualifications or first-year examination results and the content of their application and essay. Successful students will receive a one off payment of £1,000.
