Challenging Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination
The University aims to take a pro-active approach to tackling bullying and harassment by creating a culture of respect and trust.
The University’s Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the informal procedure for staff and students set out the arrangements in place to challenge bullying and harassment. They aim to provide a fair, unbiased, confidential process which treats people with respect empowering people to be heard.
ADVICE: staff are advised to speak to someone they can trust.

- Mediation may be able to help you resolve a disagreement or conflict informally
- Network group members may also be able to offer advice on local support outside of the university
The process of talking through what has happened with someone else can help to determine what action to take to stop it happening.
If you do not wish to speak with the person yourself you might want to ask your manager or HR Partner to approach the individual on your behalf.
If you wish to make a formal complaint as a member of staff you should contact your HR Partner. The Dignity at Work and Study Procedure for Staff sets out the formal procedures for investigation of complaints of unacceptable behaviour in relation to members of staff of the University.
It is important to begin to keep a note of the details and dates of any incidents which have caused them distress, including:
- date of incident(s);
- nature of incident(s);
- the response made by the complainant;
- the complainant’s feelings at the time;
- any action taken by the complainant;
- the name of any witnesses; and
- any relevant emails, voicemails, memos and other correspondence.
If you wish to make a formal complaint as a student you should refer to Regulation XVIII which sets out the formal procedures for investigation of student complaints, including complaints of unacceptable behaviour.
