12.00 - 14.00 The Division of Pharmacy & Optometry Information Stall

Stopford Building Foyer

The Division of Pharmacy and Optometry, in the School of Health Sciences, are hosting a stall for International Women’s Day

  • Dr Katie Finegan will have information on breast cancer.  
  • Prof Kay Marshall, Dr Lynda Harris and Dr Debbie Fischer will have information on ovarian cancer and endometriosis
  • The DPO students MIND ambassadors will have information on wellbeing.

There will also be free fruit and cake. All are welcome, please come along and support the stall.

Chemistry Each for Equal 


The Department of Chemistry will be marking the day with an afternoon of activities in the Chemistry Building. We are welcoming keynote speakers who will be talking about their careers so far and previous students and researchers from the department who will be on our panel session. You'll also have the opportunity to speak to all of our attendees at the networking session where we will have stands on the following career paths: PhD studies, academia, teaching and careers both in and out of chemistry. 

Schedule for the day:

12:30 - 13:00: Registration

13:00 - 14:00: Keynote Lectures: Prof. Nazira Karodia and Dr Melody Obeng

14:00 - 14:30: Exhibition and Refreshments

14:30 - 15:30: Panel Session: Dr Catherine Finch, Dr Sarah Mohammad-Qureshi, Hanan Abdimalik, Dr Katayune Presland and Dr Vanessa Timmermann

15:30 - 16:30: Networking Session: Enjoy talking to experts at our four stations focused on different careers after chemistry, including: Teaching, Academia, PhD Studies and Careers & Recruitment!

16:30 - 18:00: Exhibition, Networking and Drinks Reception

Please note, you do not need to be a woman to attend, nor do you need to attend the whole event. This is a free event and is open to everyone - undergraduate and postgraduate students, research fellows, academic staff, technical staff and everyone else in the department who would like to attend.

18.00 - 19.00 ‘Gender and Careers, breaking down barriers’ 

Lecture Theatre 1, Undergraduate Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary. 

The Women in Medicine Society will be holding their next event in conjunction with the School of Medical Sciences Athena SWAN team to coincide with International Women’s Day!

SMS IWD2020 

This event will involve a panel discussion looking at the following topics:

  • Reasons for the choice of specialty
  • Work-life balance
  • Childcare
  • Maternity/paternity leave
  • Imposter Syndrome
  • The panel come from a range of backgrounds and specialties who will talk about their experiences so far before inviting questions from the audience for an interactive discussion.

In this interactive session, facilitated by external Trainer Dr Hannah Roberts, you will participate in group discussions and exercises to develop the confidence and skills to promote yourself effectively. 

During the 60 min #IAmRemarkable workshop we will:

  • Share data and research regarding self-promotion and unconscious bias.
  • Go through the main exercise to help you articulate your achievements and practice self-promotion.
  • Have a discussion and share take home exercises.
