Accessibility statements

To comply with Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018, each University website and mobile application must have a local accessibility statement.

What your statement must include

Your statement should

  • outline how accessible the site/app is;
  • list known accessibility issues;
  • explain how users can report problems or request alternatives;
  • describe what steps you’re taking to improve accessibility;
  • include information on what to do if a user is not satisfied with your response, linking to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance.

How to publish your statement

Please download the statement template below, customise as needed and publish your statement as an HTML page on your website, ideally at a short, descriptive URL (for example www.xxx.manchester.ac.uk/web-accessibility).

A link to the webpage with the accessibility statement is often placed in the footer of the website. For mobile apps, make sure the statement is in an accessible format and can be downloaded from the app store or a website.

If you don’t have a local statement

If a website/mobile app has no local statement, one should be created at the earliest opportunity. However, until an accessibility statement can be created it should still link to the University's general accessibility statement until one is published. This allows The University to capture user complaints or audit notifications from the Government Digital Service (GDS).

How users can raise an issue

The statement should include information on who to contact in case users need to report an accessibility problem. If the website/mobile app already has a way to gather feedback from users, this could be used also for accessibility issues if preferred; otherwise, have a dedicated email inbox or add a contact form for this purpose. Ensure messages are routed to someone who can respond promptly and coordinate fixes. Example of email accounts can be:
