Change to Fit Note procedure for sickness absence

21 Dec 2021

The Government has made a temporary change to the Fit Note Scheme (formerly known as ‘sick notes’)

With effect from 10 December 2021 staff can self-certify their absence from work for a maximum of 28 days including bank holidays and weekends – this was formerly seven days.  Staff only need to attend a GP for a Fit Note if they have been ill for more than 28 days and have taken sick leave.

This change is to free up GPs to take part in the COVID-19 vaccine programme.

Staff should continue to follow absence reporting procedures and keep in touch with their manager during any period of absence from work.

This change will be in place until 26 January 2022.  We will update you again if there are any further changes to these rules.
