Blockbuster of inspirational research storytelling from the SPARK Report

09 Jan 2020

The Future Index supplies the University with regular reports that demonstrate current trends, and give inspiration in the world of brands and marketing. The latest issue focuses on research storytelling and has a blockbuster 30 sparks of inspiration including:

  • Columbia University’s Year of Water – an interdisciplinary investigation of all things H2O. Led by the School of Arts, and hosted through exhibits, concerts, lectures and symposia, it’s an excellent example of how arts and science can fuse in telling the bigger research stories.
  • It’s important for some research to be aligned to popular culture and be accessible to as many people as possible. The University of Sheffield’s Science Behind ASMR does this really well with an excellent YouTube story that could be of particular interest to prospective students in the way it explores the sensual, social media phenomenon.
  • The University of Central Florida’s exploration of love bugs (which the University was blamed for introducing) through a fun video. Find out why lady love bugs swarm cars when they’re ready for mating…

And from outside Higher Education:

  • It’s one thing to read about the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. It’s another to see it happening in front of your eyes. Time’s new immersive AR app enables you to throw yourself into their stories and use your mobile or VR headset to explore scenes in 360 degrees.
  • In Mongolia, a charity for child protection created an innovative digital adshel that showed videos of cold children outside who then received warm items of clothing when you made a contribution via the card machine. So, donors could see for themselves the difference their contribution could make.
  • Who wouldn’t want to live and work here? A great way to tell your community story. Brainport, a purpose-built smart district in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, on hosting a collaboration of Dutch research excellence, including TUe and Tilburg.
