Student recruitment special from the SPARK Report

25 Nov 2019

The Future Index supplies the University with regular reports that demonstrate current trends, and give inspiration in the world of brands and marketing. The latest issue focuses on student recruitment – particular highlights include:

  • Kindai University in Japan has created a video using the epic disaster movie genre to attract new engineering students. Tapping into local youth culture, the mini-movie shows their city under attack – as panic ensues, the audience sees their engineering students run to their university and use giant robot ‘Magrobo’ to save the world.
  • Glasgow University’s latest campaign is an example of longer form content, featuring Sofia, a Nigerian PhD student who is one of their Future World Changers. Her powerful story is a mission to ‘lead an army of intellectuals,’ taking her skills back home to empower young Africa. Facebook engagement has seen the video receive 261 comments and 748 shares.

Other campaigns from universities in the UK:

  • The University of East London’s #BeTheNext campaign champions the Entrepreneur, the Creator and the Innovator – all focusing on actual alumni, including polished campaign hero videos supported by 16 further stories.
  • Clearing can be a difficult time for parents and guardians just as it can be for students – to help with this, the University of Northumbria have designed a web portal for them, featuring a video guide to clearing and an opportunity to listen to advice from other parents.

Finally, from outside the HE sector:

  • Marvel Insiders is a great example of how to promote social media advocacy programmes – they use a points system for watching and sharing content, with chances to earn a host of rewards.
  • BT’s new Beyond Limits advert has an inspiring narrative, bringing together all that’s possible in the world of learning technology, while telling the story with an emotive edge.
