Sally Sykes contributes to the Chartered Institute of Public Relations' 70th anniversary celebrations and is elected to the Court of the Company of PR Practitioners

Sally Sykes

The University’s Director of Communications and Marketing, Sally Sykes, has contributed to a book published by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Sally has written a chapter in Platinum, which features insights from communications and PR thought leaders and showcases excellence in public relations throughout the Institute’s history.

Her article ‘Achieving parity of esteem for mental health’ discusses the role of public relations in reducing the stigma of mental illness and ensuring mental health is as valued as physical health.

Sally’s article was selected because it highlights how effective communications, campaigning, health policy changes and high-profile role models in the public eye who are prepared to speak out about mental well-being, have all contributed to changing the way we view mental health as a society.

‘Platinum’ was launched at a reception in London to celebrate both the launch of the book and the release of a list of  70 at 70 public relations practitioners and influencers who have contributed to the profession as volunteers. Sally was regional chair of the CIPR in the North West for four years in the early 2000s and later joined the board nationally, becoming Treasurer, and was then elected President in 2012.

Sally said: “I was honoured to be peer-nominated for inclusion in the national ’70 at 70’ list and for my chapter on talking more openly about mental health to be included in the ‘Platinum’ essay collection celebrating the positive contribution of the public relations profession to public understanding.”

Platinum is available to buy in print and eBook, and profits will be donated to iprovision, the CIPR's benevolent fund for PR practitioners:

In addition, at a ceremony at the church of St Bartholomew the Great in London, Sally has been elected to the Court of the Company of PR Practitioners. A membership organisation and part of the City of London’s livery movement of trade associations, it leads communication industry charitable endeavour.
