New investment in learning and development

Find out how you can get involved in our exciting new programme – or even contribute ideas
The University is investing in the personal and professional development of communications and marketing colleagues with a new training programme.
Part of our Communications and Marketing Plan, the programme is designed to develop skills and knowledge and share ideas and best practice in order to meet the needs of the ever-changing HE landscape.
It is available to staff across all areas led by the Communication and Marketing Leadership Team (CMLT) and offers a range of opportunities, including big events, a masterclass series and workshops featuring in-house externally-sourced experts, as well as online resources.
It also includes the Communications and Marketing Conference on Monday, 18 June – so make sure you save the date.
The programme was launched at a Hack event last month, in which 70 colleagues from across the University came together to work on a live brief to create a campaign to engage University staff in one of our three goals.
Three of the many exciting and inspiring ideas have been put forward to CMLT for consideration. The final decision will be confirmed following February’s meeting.
Further ideas for the training programme and feedback are welcome. We’re also setting up a working group of four or five representatives from across the University to help shape the programme further. If you’re interested in joining, email:
The programme will run until December 2018 and then be reviewed to potentially extend to next year.
The Communication and Marketing Newsletter will be the main communication channel for updates on future sessions and booking details, so keep an eye on your inbox for all the latest news.

Our Masterclass series commences with ‘What gets measured, gets done: The importance of metrics in communications and marketing’, presented by our colleague Justin Wilson, Senior Digital Marketing Officer in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.
This interactive 90-minute training session will show how you can use digital tools to measure the performance of online and offline marketing and communications activity. Using real-world examples of measuring email marketing, offline marketing and digital advertising, you’ll see where you can find the right data, what it is telling you and how you can use it to improve future marketing and communications campaigns.
The available dates are Thursday, 22 March and Wednesday, 28 March, 11am-12.30pm. Places are limited so booking is essential
