Increase in bike theft on campus

07 Feb 2022

Information on how to keep your bikes safe

We encourage staff and students to use bikes to travel to and from campus (where possible) as part of our sustainability pledge. However, in recent weeks we have received an increase in reports of bike theft, as the return of students after the Christmas break has given thieves greater opportunities to target campus.

We urge all staff and students to remain vigilant. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, alert the University Security Team by calling the number on the back of your staff card (from an internal phone 69966 or 0161 306 9966), or by using the SafeZone app.

To help keep your bike safe, our University offers a free overt bike marking service for all staff and students. If you sign up to the service, your bike will be marked with a unique anti-tamper serial number which is entered onto a database that is accessible to campus security, as well as GMP who check for such markings on any recovered stolen property across Manchester.

Bike registration sessions take place regularly on campus. This week, head to the University Security Office on Booth Street West between 8am – 11am, on Wednesday and Friday no appointment necessary. Stay up to date with bike registration events by visiting the Crime Reduction Facebook page.

You can also take advantage of the University-funded subsidised lock scheme – gold standard ‘D’ locks are on offer for £15 to all students and staff. For more details, email ian.halliwell@manchester.ac.uk.
