Admissions

The University has upgraded a number of technology platforms to enable the new Application and Admissions system for PGR.  The Admissions section will provide guidance on the processes with links to training guides for Senior Tutors, Tutors and Supervisors to aid you when interacting with the system.

Accessing submitted Applications

For academic colleagues, a simple interface has been developed, accessed via My Manchester, to view application documentation and to record and view decisions at each stage of a PGR application ‘evaluation’. When an evaluation is referred to you, you will receive an email that will include a link to sign in to the PGR Evaluation Dashboard. Application and Offer Deadlines

To ensure we can support applications submitted for a particular entry point and manage the expectations of applicants, below are the application and offer deadlines the Admissions Team will be working towards.  As many international applicants have additional steps before they are able to join us, we must provide them with realistic timeframes to complete these steps.  This information is clearly displayed on our website for applicants to see.

Division PG Tutor and Senior PG Tutor

The role of the Division PG Tutor and Senior PG Tutor is fundamental in supporting the admission process.  Before any offer can be made to a PGR applicant, they MUST have had a PG Tutor interview.  In the new PGR Admissions System (PGRA) the Division PG Tutor is assigned to the application by the Admissions Team at the required stage of the admissions process.

When the supervisor completes their recommendation to progress the application the PG tutor interview stage of the evaluation moves to in progress.  An email notification is sent to the PG Tutor informing them that there is an action for them to complete in the PGRA. It is expected that the PG Tutor will arrange the formal interview with the applicant directly before completing their recommendation in the PGRA.

The Senior PG Tutor is responsible for reviewing each stage of the evaluation including the details of the offer to be made (the suitability of the supervisory team, candidate suitability based upon their background, funding arrangements etc) before approving any offer.

School & Division Specific Information

This section will provide information on specific admissions processes that must be completed alongside the standard admissions processes.

Division of Cancer Sciences (not CRUK MI supervisors)

The Division of Cancer Sciences PGR committee requires supervisors to complete a Research Degrees Proposal (RDP) form before the recruitment of an overseas/self-funded PhD student. The form will be reviewed and approved by the DCS PRGR committee before any PGR tutor interview takes place. When you have decided to move forward with an application please return the completed copy of the RDP to Andrew Gilmore copying in the Division PGR Tutor as assigned as in PGR Admissions System (PGRA) and School Admissions Administrator.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • I have received an enquiry from a potential applicant and wish to progress this. What do I need to do next: If you wish to move to formally consider an application you can forward the email to the Admissions Team admissions.doctoralacademy@manchester.ac.uk  or direct the enquirer to the How To Apply section of the website which will guide them through the step by step process.
  • An applicant has stated they have applied but I have not received the application: The Admissions Team will be prioritising applications based on the next available entry point.  If the applicant is expected to join at the next entry point please contact your School Admissions Administrator who will look into your request and circulate the application if eligibility has been met.
  • How do I access the new admissions system to review any applications: You can access the PGRA via My Manchester deep link.
  • How do I know if an application is waiting for me to consider: The system will send an email notification three times a day (11 am, 3 pm and 6 pm) informing you that there is an action to be carried out in the PGRA. A new email notification is only sent if you have a new action to carry out.  You can also access the PGRA via My Manchester directly at any time.
  • When I click on the link to access an application I have been assigned I receive an error message, what should I do: If you receive an error message when trying to access PGRA please send a screenshot of the error.  The admissions team would look at the error message and confirm whether this is an IT issue or if this will need to be escalated and how this will be resolved.
  • I wish to contact the PG Tutor assigned to the application. How do I know who the PG Tutor is: When you are in the PGRA you can select the next stage in the evaluation (Interview Outcome) which will state the name of the PG tutor assigned to the application.
  • How do I know if I am the primary supervisor assigned to an application: When you log into the PGRA under the section Supervisory Team Review next to the applicant's name there will be a purple 'P' which indicates that you are the primary evaluator for the application.
  • I have an applicant who has been awarded an externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship.  Will they require a formal PG Tutor interview: it has been agreed that an independent PG Tutor interview is not required for new PGR students that have been awarded an externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship (CRTF) (ie Wellcome, MRC, BHF, NIHR).  These candidates come with a solid academic background and have been through a rigorous interview process with the relevant funding body.  However, we do expect the supervisory team to provide an overview of the Doctoral Academy and its role to the student during the selection/offer process.  Supervisors are encouraged where possible to arrange a separate informal meeting with their Divisional PG Tutor with the candidate.
  • I have been awarded funding to support a PhD student.  How do I advertise this and what is the process: Further information on the project form to complete and the recruitment process can be found in the Advertising Studentships section.
  • I wish to advertise a self-funded project: To advertise a self-funded project you must complete the relevant self-funded project form
