Funding for impact

Funding within the University of Manchester

There are a number of funds you can apply to within the University of Manchester to support impact, as detailed below.  For guidance on how to incorporate impact into external funding applications, please see our Guidance for Researchers page.

Industry collaboration funding

Industry collaboration funding enables UK research organisations (including The University of Manchester) to speed up the real-world impact of academic research. A number of schemes are supported by the University’s Knowledge Exchange Team, who actively seek external businesses and other organisations to engage with, delivering research and expertise effectively and efficiently.

The current schemes are:

  • EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account – providing a broad range of mechanisms to support knowledge exchange, from initial engagement and collaboration, through to commercialisation.
  • ESRC Impact Acceleration Account – encouraging two-way dialogue and collaboration between social scientists and research users in order to maximise the potential impact of social science research on policy and practice.
  • MRC Proximity to Discovery Fund – supporting early interactions and knowledge exchange between industry and MRC research outputs.
  • BBSRC Impact Acceleration Account - to strengthen knowledge exchange, initiate and build collaborative relationships, support the translation/commercialisation of early-stage research and support imaginative approaches to impact delivery.

For more details, contact the University’s Knowledge Exchange Team:

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme is a leading knowledge transfer programme to support business innovation.

KTPs are available across a diverse range of public and private industry sectors. Your KTP project could deliver improvements to existing products, support development of novel products and systems, as well as create frameworks to improve efficiencies in processes and upskill staff.
