Faculty communications – some changes and reminders

11 Feb 2019

Recently implemented changes to the scheduling and format of our key communications channels

As you may have realised, we have recently implemented some changes to the scheduling and format of our key communications channels – FBMH News, the Dean’s message and the Faculty announcement system. Here’s a quick overview of the changes and a reminder of the processes for submitting content.

Weekly communications schedule

  • Starting today, 11 February, the Faculty’s e-update, FBMH News, will be issued fortnightly every Monday (previously Friday)
  • Also from today, the Dean’s message will be issued as a separate communication and will be issued weekly, every Monday
  • We will continue to issue the weekly Events Bulletin every Thursday
  • The Daily Update will continue to be issued every day (apart from Thursday) around 1.00pm

Submitting content

  • All content for FBMH News should be sent to bmhcommunications@manchester.ac.uk, ideally a week in advance of the publication date
  • All staff members can submit content to the Faculty announcement system via the intranet site HERE. Guidance on how to submit an article is available HERE. Your announcement should be submitted by 12 noon to ensure it can be moderated and issued the same day in the Daily Update
  • Faculty events are normally NOT publicised via the Daily Update – instead these should be posted on Columba, the University’s events listing application. The Columba listing will then be used to create the weekly Events Bulletin. Instructions on how to post your event on Columba are available HERE
  • By exception only, events may be publicised via announcements – for example a last-minute reminder for an undersubscribed Faculty event; or an event being advertised to a small School or Divisional audience

  • A note about duplication
  • Before submitting information, please check that you are not repeating messages that have already been issued via other means
  • While the Faculty communications team will check for any duplication on the announcement system and Columba, they will be unaware if, for example, managers have been asked to cascade the same messages to their teams
  • Duplication can not only diminish the effectiveness of our communications processes, (Why read the Daily update as I will get told separately by my manager if it is important?) it can waste managers’ time and ultimately be counterproductive
