AI Transformation Programme
In 2024, Professor Chris Taylor led an institutional review of AI, resulting in the creation of AI Strategy Groups to direct University AI activity. These groups were established to guide the development and integration of AI across various aspects of university life.
Bringing together experts, students, and representatives from areas such as social responsibility, sustainability, and information governance, the groups ensure that our AI initiatives are ethical, inclusive, and impactful.
Strategy Groups
University AI Strategy Group (U-AISG)
- Chaired by Professor Chris Taylor.
- The U-AISG has been established to oversee, and ensure the coherence of, the University’s response to the challenges and opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence, building on the recommendations of the AI Review.
Professional Services AI Strategy Group (PS-AISG)
- Chaired by Alex Goffe and Ciaran Talbot.
- The PS-AISG provides strategic direction, governance, and operational oversight for AI adoption within the University, supporting academic and student outcomes, and driving operational efficiency and innovation in Professional Services.
Research AI Strategy Group (R-AISG)
- Chaired by Professor Caroline Jay.
- The Research AI Strategy Group has been established to align the university's AI research activities with its strategic decisions, provide a vision for AI integration and advancement, and recommend necessary infrastructure. It facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration, identifies funding opportunities, and monitors policy developments to support AI research. Additionally, it promotes ethical AI use and supports AI skill development among researchers.
Ethical and Responsible AI Steering Group (ER-AISG)
- Chaired by Michael Fisher
- The aim of this group is to draw on expertise from across the institution to ensure all aspects of ethical and responsible use are covered in our development and deployment of an E&R AI framework for the University. The Group oversees and is accountable for delivery, but operational responsibility is delegated to existing University functions and, where necessary, working groups. The Group includes representatives of major stakeholders, to ensure there is an understanding of the impact decisions it makes will have across the University.
Working Groups
Environmental Sustainability Working Group (ES-WG)
- Chaired by Alejandro Gallego Schmid and Caterina Doglioni
- The ES-WG is made up of two subgroups, covering teaching & learning and research. The group is committed to reviewing and assessing the environmental impact of AI and coordinating University-based sustainability initiatives in conjunction with a range of teams including Digital Futures and Sustainable Futures.
AI Upskilling and Training Working Group
- Chaired by Sonal Patel
-
The AI Upskilling and Training Working Group leads the design and delivery of tailored AI training programmes across the University, identifying development needs and turning them into accessible learning solutions. It is currently focussed on providing AI Essentials training, to build confidence in AI adoption. It aims to ensure people‑readiness and supporting structures are delivered to agreed standards, and continuously reviews processes, identifies gaps, and implements improvements to maximise the impact of AI‑related change.
