Unit specifications

Units are the basic building blocks of programmes. A programme specification summarises essential information about a programme in a single document, and a unit specification does the same for an individual unit. A unit specification is a key reference document and care must be taken to ensure that it is accurate and up-to-date.

The University has a standard template for unit specifications and provides notes for guidance for the completion of the template.

Many of the elements are similar to those in programme specifications, e.g. aims, syllabus and learning and teaching methods. It is important that the intended learning outcomes specified for a unit contribute to those for the programme as a whole and are appropriate for the level or stage of the programme at which the unit is expected to be taken.
