Widening Participation Award for SALC outreach

27 Mar 2018

School Outreach colleagues, Sonja Bernhard and Cathryn Owen recognised in Making a Difference Awards 2018

Congratulations to Sonja Bernhard and Cathryn Owen, whose work on the "Languages XP" project has been commended in the University's Making a Difference Awards 2018.

The awards recognise the outstanding achievements of our staff, students, alumni and external partners and celebrate how they are making a difference.

The "Languages XP" project was entered into the category for ‘Outstanding contribution to Widening Participation’ and received a commendation.

The project trains current UG languages students to deliver a set of 4 beginners’ language and culture taster sessions, as well as broader IAG about HE in local and WP schools. It is primarily focused on supporting Key Stage 3 and 4, but can also support KS 5, if requested by participating schools.

This project has been run by Sonja since the 2014-2015 academic year, after originally being started by an academic to support the promotion of Middle Eastern Languages. Sonja has since expanded the project to include UG students from across SALC’s language courses, leading to increased participation by local schools, and hundreds of pupil and teacher beneficiaries. The programme continues to grow from strength to strength, despite the current national struggles to attract pupils to study  languages and we would like to give those concerned the recognition they deserve.

It is great experience for everyone involved and has positive impact on the skills development of the pupils, teachers and UG students alike.
