Health & Safety update

22 Mar 2018

Please ensure that you are up-to-date with developments in Health & Safety

  • Academic staff are encouraged to complete the one hour online training course named Management of off-campus activities (Code TLCO210). The course is aimed at staff who are accountable for the health and safety of other staff, students and third parties involved in off-campus activities including fieldwork and applies a systematic management and planning approach to these activities

  • Accident, Incident and Near-Miss Reporting: All accidents, incidents or near-misses on School premises or arising out of University business must be notified via email to compliance.salc@manchester.ac.uk in the first instance and ideally within 24 hours. Incidents result in damage to property only with no injuries, and near-misses are incidents with a potential for personal injury or physical damage but no actual injury or damage. The details will then need to be notified to the University’s Safety Services using the University’s Accident, Incident/Near-Miss Report Form in consultation with the School Safety Advisor.

  • Risk Assessments: All completed generic risk assessments (covering activities on campus, off-campus in the UK, and low risk international activities) and specific risk assessments must be sent via email to compliance.salc@manchester.ac.uk for validation. Following validation, the staff member concerned needs to share the risk assessment with staff/students that will take part in the planned task or activity. Please note that any task or activity that might be categorised as high risk may require authorisation from the Head of School, Dean of Faculty, and the Head of Compliance. Therefore, it is strongly advisable that risk assessments are submitted for validation before any funds are spent on the planned task/activity.

For more information on risk assessments please complete the short online Principles of Risk Assessment (Code TLCO300) or Management of off-campus Activities (Code TLCO210) courses available from the Training Catalogue.
