FSE Output supporting text guidance for RRE 2020:

For the RRE, FSE authors should ensure that their output supporting text aligns with the REF panel guidance contained in the REF Panel Criteria and Working Methods:

-          Paragraph 228 for contribution statements for UOA 9

-          Paragraphs 256 & 257 for significance statements for UOAs 11 and 12

For proposed outputs to RRE 2020 please provide the following information, if required:

1.       For authors in Physics (UOA9) - Contribution to a co-authored output:

If there are more than 15 authors AND you are not lead or corresponding author, please provide a statement to allow the sub-panels to assess the nature of your contribution to the output (maximum 100 words), which allows the reviewer to judge that you made a substantial contribution to the output. No statement is required for 15 authors or fewer, or if you are lead or corresponding author.

2.       Factual information about significance:

For authors in the Schools of SEES, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, and Maths, please do not provide any statement about the significance of the output.

For authors in Computer Science, CEAS, EEE, MACE, and Materials (UOAs 11 and 12) please provide a statement of significance of the output (maximum 100 words) in accordance with the following guidance:

  • This statement could include, for example, additional evidence about how an output has gained recognition, impacted the state of the art, led to further developments, or has been applied.
  •  The statement should be succinct, verifiable, and externally referenced where appropriate. Where claims are made relating to the industrial significance of the output, the name and contact details of a senior industrialist should be given to allow verification of claims at a later-date.
  •  Information provided should not comprise: a synopsis of the output, a volunteered opinion as to the quality of the output or citation data. Any information provided that is of this nature will be disregarded.
  • It is expected that, in most cases, sufficient information will be provided in significantly fewer words than the 100 word limit.

3.       Review articles:

For review articles, the statement must identify the original research or new insights reported, to assist with the assessment of research quality (maximum 300 words).

4.       Outputs containing significant information published prior to 1 January 2014:

If your output includes significant material in common with an output published prior to 1 January 2014, please explain how the earlier work was revised to incorporate new material (maximum 100 words).

If you do not need to include any supporting text for your output, please add a statement to the Output Supporting text box to say ‘Supporting text not required’
