Triumph for EPS-PSS team in first ever staff five-a-side tournament

16 Jan 2015

SPORT Manchester’s pilot event for staff sport was a huge success

The winning team, EPS PSS, looking tired but pleased

On Wednesday, 14 January 2015, SPORT Manchester, through its new Sport England financed program SPORTICIPATE, piloted its first staff-only competition; a five-a-side football tournament at the Sugden Centre.

As the first event aimed at staff members, it was intended as a taster event, to see who (if any) was interested in organised staff sporting opportunities. To our delight it was received incredibly well.

With 10 teams, 60 players, 2½ hours, 23 matches and 106 goals scored, the tournament was a huge success. Some of the 10 teams included players from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS-PSS), Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS), SPORT Manchester, Careers Service, Student Services Centre (SSC), the Library and the School of Law. All were split into two groups of five, with the top two going through to the semi-finals, then a final to determine the overall winner of the tournament.

The semi-finals, SPORT Manchester vs SSC and EPS-PSS vs History, both ended in a nail biting knock-out penalty shootout, with SSC and EPS-PSS proceeding to the final.

After a hectic 10 minutes, EPS PSS were declared the winners of this debut tournament.

Everyone participating had a fantastic time, and we look forward to seeing them at our next events.

Special mention to Paul Gratrick (from the Careers Service), who supported the development and delivery of the day. Keep a look out for our next Staff Sport events on StaffNet.
