2014-15 Learning through Research Programme Launch

The 2014-15 ‘Learning through Research’ funding programme will be launched by the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell and the Associate Vice-President (Teaching, Learning and Students) Professor Kersti Börjars at a lunch on 17 November (1-3pm) in the Kanaris Lecture Room at the Manchester Museum
The University of Manchester has a strong reputation for its research and its teaching and our students benefit from the interaction between them. The University’s teaching is informed by its research at all levels but, more importantly, Manchester students learn in an environment where they are encouraged to develop and use research skills.
Research involves a spectrum of skills, some of which are discipline-specific, but many of which are generic and applicable not just within the academic sphere. Generic research skills enhance employability and more generally to equip students to respond well to opportunities and challenges beyond the working environment.
Teaching and research are most obviously integrated in dissertations and specific research projects, most frequently in the final year. However the aim of the ‘Learning through Research’ initiative is to recognise, reward and develop the integration of teaching and research throughout the curriculum, right from the first year of study.
In 2014-15 our funding programme will consist of small grants for staff-student collaborative projects and awards to recognise existing activity that support the aims of ‘Learning through Research’.
The funding programme launch event is open to both staff and students who are interested in finding out more about ‘Learning through Research’ and in developing collaborative projects.
