Technologies of Hope and Dread: Cancer Treatment in 20th Century Manchester

Cancer treatment may represent both the best and the worst of modern medicine: surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy promise a cure, but at the cost of side effects, late effects, and permanent bodily change for the patients who undergo these treatments.  How have doctors and patients managed the combination of hope and dread inspired by such therapies? Historians Carsten Timmermann and Elizabeth Toon use artefacts from the Museum of Medicine and Health to address this question, considering how therapeutic innovations reshaped cancer treatment in Manchester and beyond.
