What the IGO do

The University handles a wide variety of information which is used for teaching, learning, research, commercial and administrative activities. The use of some information is constrained either by legislation, such as current data protection law, or in order to protect the interests of the University, whilst other information may need to be made freely available, such as information in response to freedom of information legislation requests and research papers.

Information is a valuable asset to the University and the Information Governance Office has a lead role in helping to ensure that these assets are protected.  This includes both leading and supporting the development of relevant strategic frameworks, operational processes and systems to enable the effective management and protection of the University’s information assets.

Information Governance includes the following disciplines:

  • Information Security
  • Data Protection
  • Records Management
  • Freedom of Information
  • Information Risk Management
  • Business Continuity

Our aims are:

  • Establish and deliver with ITS and other key stakeholders a strategic roadmap of progressions that will enhance the University’s approach to information governance to establish best practice, ensure the University’s legal and statutory compliance and to achieve a recognised standard of excellence.
  • Become a trusted and respected partner, working collaboratively to deliver activities that contribute directly to the success of our University. We must aspire to excellence in everything that we do.
  • By challenging established processes, managing information risks, developing policies and providing guidance to ensure leadership and all staff process information in a secure, consistent and compliant way.
