Falls now commonest type of major trauma, report reveals
21 Apr 2017
The first national report on major injury in older people has been released by the University’s Trauma Audit & Research Network (TARN), showing that falls from a standing height are now the most common cause of major trauma.
The 10-year report, based on more than 8,000 injured patients over the age of 60, reveals that in 2014, the typical severely injured patient wasn’t the traditional young male injured in a road traffic incident, but older people injured as a result of falling.
The report also found that older injured patients may be at a disadvantage in terms of receiving optimal care.
Antoinette Edwards, Executive Director at TARN, based in the Faculty’s Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care said: “This is our first comprehensive report on major trauma in older people across England and Wales and provides some important messages for those delivering trauma care across the NHS.”
